About Ridgeway Skylights

Ridgeway Skylights is a Swindon firm that fits and replaces rooflights, skylights, roof windows, roof lanterns and sun tunnels. Before we ask for any money for the work, you get the whole job written down: what we will fit and how big it is, what planning allows at your house, who checks the work under the Building Regulations, when the unit arrives and the day we fit it.

Who we are

We are an installer of rooflights and skylights based in Swindon, working on owner-occupied homes across the town and the villages and market towns within about 30 road miles. Our work is installation and replacement: new openings cut into pitched roofs, units set on flat roofs and extensions, roof lanterns on kitchen extensions, conservation rooflights on older houses, walk-on glass, electric opening units and sun tunnels.

The name comes from the Ridgeway, the old chalk track that runs along the downs just south of the town. We liked the idea of a route that is already marked out before you set off. That is how we run a job.

Why we write the plan down

Rooflight jobs rarely go wrong on the roof. They go wrong earlier: a unit ordered before anyone measured the rafter spacing, a lantern planned for an estate where a planning condition removed permitted development rights, a front slope in a conservation area where nobody spoke to the council, or a fitting that was booked for one day and ran into three.

So a written job plan is attached to each quote. It sets out what we will fit, how big it is and why, what we found about permission for your street, who will check the work under the Building Regulations, how long the unit takes to arrive and which day we will be on your roof. You can read it, question it and show it to anyone you like before you agree to anything.

What the plan records

  • The unit and the exact size code
  • The permission position for your address
  • The Building Control route and who signs off
  • The order lead time from the manufacturer
  • The fitting day and what happens on it
  • How the finished work is handed over

Permission, checked for your house

Most rooflights on houses fall under permitted development, but not all. Conditions on newer estates, Article 4 directions, listed buildings, flats and conservation areas can all change the answer. Swindon alone has the Railway Village, Old Town and a run of newer estates where the decision notice for the house needs reading.

We check the planning register and the council's conservation pages for your address and tell you what we find in plain words. The council makes the decision; our job is to make sure you know where you stand before a unit is ordered. The detail of the rules is in our rooflight planning permission guide.

Where we work

We cover Swindon and the surrounding area to roughly 30 road miles from the town centre. That takes in Highworth, Wroughton and the villages of the borough, and runs out to Marlborough, Cirencester, Malmesbury, Faringdon, Wantage and Chippenham. Over the borough line, the planning authority changes: Wiltshire Council, Cotswold District, Vale of White Horse, West Berkshire or West Oxfordshire, and we check with the right one.

The full list of towns and villages is on our areas we cover page. There is no showroom or yard to visit: the survey and the fitting both happen at your home.

The guarantee

Every installation carries our 10-year workmanship guarantee. It covers the work we do: the fitting, the flashing and weathering we install, and the internal finish where we carry it out. The manufacturer's own product warranty on the unit sits alongside it and passes to you. The terms are set out on our guarantee page.

If the job is notifiable, the Building Control notification is ours to make, so the sign-off arrives with the job rather than as a task left for you.

How to start

Send us a few details through the quote form, by email or on WhatsApp. A photo of the roof or the old unit helps. We will arrange a survey visit, measure up and look into planning, and the written quote arrives with the plan attached. Neither costs you anything, and you decide in your own time.

If you want a sense of cost first, our costs page explains what moves the price. To see the products we fit, start with our services.
